Kyōden also wrote sharebon. These were "books of manners." They helped people learn how to act in certain places.

Sometimes, the government made new rules. These rules were called the Kansei Reforms. The leaders did not like some books. They thought some stories were harmful. Because of this, Kyōden faced hard times. He was even put in handcuffs for fifty days. After this, he changed his style. He began writing yomihon. These were "books for reading." They were large and more serious.

Kyōden was also a shop owner. He sold tobacco in a shop in Ginza. He was very smart at business. He put ads for his shop inside his books. This was a new idea in Japan. He even used rebuses, which are puzzles made of pictures and letters. He was a very busy and famous man.
