The Sangli Metropolitan Region is a large urban agglomeration in India. It is located in the Sangli district of Maharashtra state. This metropolitan area is formed by three main urban centers. These centers are Sangli, Miraj, and Kupwad. The region functions as a single municipal corporation. This means the three areas work together under one governing body. This body is known as the Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation.

The geography of the region is defined by its rivers and proximity. Sangli sits directly on the banks of the Krishna River. The other two main areas, Miraj and Kupwad, are quite close to Sangli. Historically, they were small towns located within a 10-kilometer distance of Sangli. This close distance allowed them to grow toward one another. Today, they form a continuous urban landscape. This connection helps the region act as a major hub in the district.

Each part of the metropolitan area serves a specific economic purpose. Miraj is a vital center for healthcare and transportation. It serves as a major railway junction for the region. Miraj is also a global export hub for classical Indian musical instruments. The city hosts several important medical facilities. These include the Government Medical College and Wanless Hospital. Other specialized sites include the Krupamayi Mental Hospital and Richardson Leprosy Hospitals.

Kupwad provides the industrial strength for the metropolitan region. It contains the MIDC, which is a large industrial area. This area houses many different types of manufacturing plants. You can find foundries like Tulsi foundry and J sons foundry there. The region also has spinning mills, such as Toto Toya Spin Ltd. Other industries include chocolate factories and oil manufacturing plants like Chakan oil mills. Kupwad also manages cold storage and other industrial needs. The Employees' State Insurance Hospital (ESIS Hospital) serves workers in the Kupwad MIDC area.

The governance of the region changed significantly in the late 1990s. Before this, Sangli, Miraj, and Kupwad were separate municipal councils. On February 28, 1998, these three councils merged into one. This merger created the Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation. The corporation is led by a mayor. It consists of members who are democratically elected by the people. These members come from various leading political parties in the state. The corporation is responsible for the city's infrastructure and public services. It also manages the local police force.

Demographic data shows that the region is home to a large population. According to the India census, the population exceeds 500,000 people. The population is nearly balanced between genders. Males make up 51% of the people, while females make up 49%. Education is a strong feature of this metropolitan area. The average literacy rate is 77%. This is significantly higher than the national average of 59.5%. Within this group, male literacy is 81% and female literacy is 69%. Additionally, 12% of the total population is under 6 years of age.

The region is also a place of great cultural and linguistic diversity. The people living here speak many different languages. In the city of Miraj, Urdu speaking Muslims form a majority of 50%. In Kupwad, the linguistic makeup is even more varied. Research from 1971 by Gumperz and Wilson describes this diversity. In Kupwad, Kannada speaking Jains and Lingayats formed the majority. Other residents included Marathi speaking Dalits and Urdu speaking Muslims. There were also a few Telugu speaking rope-makers living in the area. This mix of languages and cultures makes the region a unique part of Maharashtra.
