This zoo works in a very special way to keep animals happy. Instead of using small, metal cages, it uses open-air exhibits. These areas are designed to look like natural habitats from the wild. For example, some spots look like an African rainforest. Other areas look like a cold, snowy tundra.

To keep animals safe without wires, the zoo uses water moats. These are deep pools of water that act like a barrier. This allows visitors to see animals in a way that feels real.

The zoo has a long and interesting history. It started with animals left over from a big fair in 1915. Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth founded the Zoological Society of San Diego in 1916. He was the president for many years until 1941. In 1921, the city set aside land in Balboa Park for the zoo. Later, a woman named Belle Benchley became the zoo director. She led the zoo from 1925 until 1953.
