This was in a place now called Namibia. He became a leader in 1890. At first, he had good relations with German rulers. But things changed over time. German farmers took Herero land for railroads. The Germans also wanted the Herero to work for low pay.

Maharero wanted to protect his people. In 1904, he led a revolt. His forces were successful at first. They attacked German towns and posts. But the Germans sent more troops. A leader named Lothar von Trotha took command. He used big guns and machine guns. The Herero were defeated at the Battle of Waterberg. Many people died from thirst or hunger in the desert. This was a very sad time for the Herero.

Maharero led about 1,000 people to a new land. They went to what is now Botswana. He stayed their leader until he died in 1923. Later, his body was moved back home. Today, Namibia calls him a national hero. People still celebrate him on Herero Day.
