In Buddhist practice, people use two special qualities to train the mind. These are called samatha and vipassanā. Samatha is often translated as calm, serenity, or tranquility. It is a way to make the mind still and quiet.

This quality helps the mind rest on one single object of focus. Many people use mindfulness of breathing to achieve this state of peace. When the mind is calm, it becomes much easier to look at things clearly. Some traditions see samatha as a way to prepare the mind for deeper work.

Vipassanā is a different quality that means insight or clear-seeing. The word literally means "super-seeing" or seeing in a special way. It is not just about thinking about things with logic. Instead, it is about seeing how things really are through direct experience.

Practitioners use vipassanā to understand the true nature of reality. This includes seeing that all things are impermanent, meaning they always change. It also involves understanding suffering and the idea of non-self. By seeing these truths, people hope to find a path to awakening.

History shows that these two ideas have been discussed for a long time. In early Buddhist texts, samatha and vipassanā were often seen as parts of a single path. They were not always treated as separate techniques to be done one after the other. Some scholars believe they were part of the original practice used by the Buddha.

Later, thinkers like Buddhaghosa wrote about them as two distinct methods. He described a way where samatha helps a person focus, which then allows mindfulness to work. This helped create a structured way for people to study and practice.

There are many different ways people practice these ideas today. In the 18th century, meditation was reinvented in Myanmar by a person named Medawi. This led to the Vipassanā movement in the 20th century. This movement often focuses more on "dry insight," which uses vipassanā without much samatha.

Other teachers, like those in the Thai Forest Tradition, say you must use both together. In modern times, these ideas have reached many people through the mindfulness movement. Famous teachers like Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg have helped share these methods in the West.

These practices link closely to how we understand our own minds. Even if someone is not Buddhist, they might recognize the goal of being calm. The idea of mindfulness is now used in many parts of life.

It helps people notice the world around them with more clarity. Whether through breathing or observing changes, the goal is to see clearly. Understanding these ancient ideas can help us notice how our own thoughts and feelings move and change every day.
