Salto has a very long history. The first settlement began on 8 November 1756. It started when Governor Viana built barracks for his army. These soldiers lived by hunting and fishing. Later, a strong fort called San Antonio was built in 1757. The fort had a small chapel inside it. In 1811, many people camped on the Uruguay River near Salto. This group was part of the Exodus of the Western People. They included 6,000 military people and 4,500 civilians.
The city has changed many times over the years. It was first called a village, or "Pueblo." In 1835, it became a town known as a "Villa." Then, in 1837, it became the capital of its department. By 1863, Salto was officially called a "Ciudad," which means city.
Many interesting things can be found in Salto. You can see a memorial called "The Seagull." It honors an engineer named Eladio Dieste. He designed many buildings in the city.

Salto is a major urban center in northwestern Uruguay. It serves as the capital of the Salto Department. As of the 2023 census, the city has 114,084 residents. This makes it the second most populated city in the entire country, following Montevideo.
The geography of Salto is defined by its relationship with the Uruguay River. The city sits on the eastern bank of this river. Directly across the water lies the Argentine city of Concordia.
Salto's climate is classified as humid subtropical. This means the weather follows specific seasonal patterns. Summers are typically sunny and hot. During these months, the area often experiences heavy rainfall. In contrast, the winters are mild. The environment also faces specific biological risks. Because it is near regions with Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, Salto is vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases. One such disease is dengue fever. Despite these risks, the area is famous for its thermal pools. These pools maintain a temperature above 38 °C (100 F) throughout the entire year.
The history of Salto began in the mid-18th century. In October 1756, Governor José Joaquín de Viana built barracks for his army. These soldiers relied on hunting and fishing to survive. This period marks the foundation of the first settlement on 8 November 1756.
Significant political movements also passed through this region. In 1811, a large group known as the Exodus of the Western People moved through the area. This group included 6,000 military personnel and 4,500 civilians. They camped on the Uruguay River near Salto for one month. During this era, General José Gervasio Artigas was a key figure. His movement eventually led to the establishment of the First Republic of Uruguay in 1825. Salto's legal status grew alongside the nation. It moved from a "Pueblo" (village) to a "Villa" (town) in 1835. It became the departmental capital in 1837. Finally, it was elevated to "Ciudad" (city) in 1863.
Architecture and culture provide much of Salto's character. The city features many works by the engineer Eladio Dieste. A notable memorial to him is "La Puerta de la Sabiduría," also called "La Gaviota."

Salto has produced many famous individuals who have achieved international success. In the world of sports, professional footballers Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani were both born here.
