It sits on the southern coast of the country. The city is located on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata. It serves as the nation's chief port and financial hub. Within the city proper, the 2023 census recorded 1,287,452 residents. This number represents about 36.8% of the total population of Uruguay.

The history of the city involves several different colonial powers. In November 1723, a Portuguese garrison was established at the site.

However, this changed quickly in February 1724. A Spanish soldier named Bruno Mauricio de Zabala expelled the Portuguese. This was a strategic move during a dispute between Spain and Portugal. While no official document marks the exact foundation, Zabala's "Diario" mentions 24 December 1726.

The city gained complete independence from Buenos Aires on 1 January 1730. It also experienced a brief period of British rule in 1807. Eventually, Spanish criollos retook the city after defeating the British invasions.

There are many theories regarding the etymology, or the origin, of the name Montevideo. All theories agree that "Monte" refers to the Cerro de Montevideo. This is the hill located across the Bay of Montevideo.

Experts disagree on the meaning of "video." One widespread belief is that it comes from a Portuguese expression meaning "I saw a mount." This might have been a mispronunciation by a sailor in Ferdinand Magellan's expedition. Another theory suggests the Latin phrase "Montem vídeo," meaning "I see a hill."

This version suggests a learned member of the expedition spoke Latin. A third hypothesis involves the name "Monte Vidi." This comes from the navigational diary of Francisco de Albo. He recorded a mountain like a hat named "Montevidi" in January 1520.

Other academic hypotheses offer different explanations for the name. One theory suggests the name is an abbreviation for "Monte VI De Este a Oeste." This would mean it was the sixth mount seen when navigating from east to west.

Another possibility is a religious connection to "Monte Ovídio." This theory links the name to Auditus of Braga, a third bishop of the Roman city of Braga. Because the Portuguese had a strong influence on the region, some link the name to Santo Ovídio. Despite these various ideas, no single theory has conclusive evidence to prove it is correct.

Montevideo has played a vital role in regional politics and conflict. During the 19th century, the city was often a site of struggle. In 1821, the area was annexed by Brazil as the province of Cisplatina. It became the capital of that province under Emperor Pedro I. Independence was re-established in 1825 by the "Treinta y Tres Orientales."

Uruguay became an independent state in 1828 with Montevideo as its capital. The city later suffered an eight-year siege during the Guerra Grande from 1843 to 1851. During this time, the population was very cosmopolitan. By 1843, only one-third of the 30,000 inhabitants were Uruguayans. The rest included many Italian, Spanish, Argentine, and Portuguese residents.

Today, the city is a major center for international organizations. It is the administrative headquarters for Mercosur and ALADI. These are the leading trade blocs in Latin America. Because of this role, people compare Montevideo to Brussels in Europe. The city is also a significant economic force. In 2022, it had a projected GDP of $53.9 billion. The per capita GDP was $30,148. In 2018, it was classified as a beta global city. This put it 84th in the world and eighth in Latin America.

Visitors to Montevideo will notice its unique urban character. The city features historic European architecture.
