Salalah is the capital city of the Dhofar governorate in southern Oman.

It serves as the largest urban center in the Dhofar province. The city is the third-largest city in the entire Sultanate of Oman. Currently, the population is close to 331,949 people. Salalah is a vital hub for trade, tourism, and culture in the Arabian Peninsula. It is also famous as the birthplace of the former Omani Sultan, Qaboos bin Said.

The city's environment is defined by a unique seasonal cycle. Most of the year, Salalah has a hot desert climate, classified as BWh. However, the landscape undergoes a massive transformation during the monsoon season. This period is known locally as the khareef, which means "autumn" in Arabic. From June to September, the once brown landscape becomes lush and green.

During July and August, the air becomes very cloudy and foggy. While actual rainfall is relatively low, the moisture creates beautiful waterfalls. Visitors flock to sites like Wadi Darbat, Ain Athum, Ain Tubrook, and Ain Khor.

In 2017, more than 600,000 tourists visited during this khareef season.

Salalah has a deep history rooted in ancient commerce. During the 13th century, the city reached a peak of prosperity. This wealth was driven by the traditional incense trade. Later, the region was absorbed by the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman in the 19th century. Between 1932 and 1970, Salalah served as the residence for Sultan Said bin Taimur. When his son, Qaboos, took the throne in 1970, he moved the capital to Muscat. Despite this, Salalah remained a place of great respect for the Sultan. In 2010, an estimated 100,000 spectators watched a massive parade to celebrate his 40th anniversary of accession.

The economy of Salalah relies heavily on its maritime and industrial sectors. A major economic engine is the Port of Salalah, located just south of the city. This port is one of the largest on the Arabian Peninsula. It acts as a vital transshipment hub for container shipping. The port connects Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. APM Terminals, part of the Danish A. P. Moller-Maersk Group, manages the facility. It is also the largest private employer in the Dhofar region. Adjacent to the port is the Salalah Free Zone. This area is emerging as a significant center for heavy industries in the Middle East.

Demographically, Salalah is a diverse and multicultural city. While the majority of the Omani population is Muslim, there is a large expatriate community. Most Omani residents follow the Sunni sect of Islam. Many expatriates come from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. This diversity is reflected in the many languages spoken. Arabic is the official language, but English is the most common foreign language. Shehri is a significant unofficial language with about 25,000 speakers. Other languages include Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, and Hindi.

Local clubs like Dhofar F.C. have seen great success. Dhofar is nicknamed "Al-Zaeem," or "The Leader," because it has won 11 trophies. In December 2026, the city will host the finish of the Budapest–Baghdad–Salalah Rally. This is a massive endurance rally covering over 10,000 kilometers.

Finally, Salalah is a center for education and regional connectivity. The city hosts government colleges like the Salalah College of Technology. It also features Dhofar University, a large private institution. For international students, the British School Salalah offers the National Curriculum of England and Wales. Traveling to Salalah is made easy by the Salalah International Airport. The airport handles domestic flights to Muscat and international flights from places like India and Qatar. Public transport has also improved, with the Mwasalat company providing daily bus services since 2018.
