Timothy was an important leader in the early Christian faith. His name means "honoring God" or "honored by God."

He was born in the region of Asia Minor. His home was likely the cities of Lystra or Derbe. Timothy came from a family with mixed backgrounds. His mother and grandmother were Jewish believers. However, his father was a Greek man. Because of this, Timothy grew up learning the holy Scriptures from a very young age.

Timothy is best known for his close friendship with the Apostle Paul. Paul became a mentor and a partner to him. They traveled together on many missionary journeys to share their beliefs. In the year 52, Paul and Silas took Timothy on a journey to Macedonia. Timothy was a very loyal companion to Paul. Some writings suggest that Timothy was naturally a reserved or timid person. Paul even wrote to others to help him feel at ease.

As Timothy grew, he took on much more responsibility. Paul eventually left Timothy in Ephesus to govern the church there. This role made him the first Catholic bishop of Ephesus. Timothy worked alongside Paul in many different cities. He was in Corinth during the winter of 57–58. He was also in Macedonia just before Passover in 58. Paul even listed Timothy as a co-author on several important letters. These include 2 Corinthians, Philippians, and Colossians.

There are two special letters in the New Testament written to him. These are called the First and Second Epistles to Timothy. Some scholars call these the Pastoral Epistles. These letters give advice on how to lead a church. They talk about how to treat different people like widows and elders. In the second letter, Paul encourages Timothy to be brave. Paul wrote this while he was in prison. He wanted Timothy to stay strong even when things were difficult.

Many different Christian groups honor Timothy today. The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers him as a saint and martyr. His feast day is January 22. Other churches, like the Church of England, celebrate him on January 26. Some people even ask for his help with stomach problems. There are also stories about where his remains were kept. In the 4th century, they were moved to Constantinople. Much later, they were found again in Italy in 1945.
