Most are blue or gray. They have a long bill on their face. This is called a rostrum. They also have a large fin on their back. This fin is called a sail.

Sailfish hunt for food in the sea. They eat squid and small fish. The sailfish keeps its sail folded down while swimming. It raises the sail during an attack. This helps the fish move its head more smoothly. This way, the prey may not see the bill coming.

Sailfish use their bills to hit fish. They can tap or slash at them. This can hurt the smaller fish. Some sailfish even prefer to hit from one side. They may hit mostly to the left or the right.
