It has many parts. A long metal prong is the main part. We call this the monouchi. It has a sharp point called the saki. Two shorter metal prongs are on the sides. These are called yoku. They have sharp points called tsume. The sai has a one-handed handle called a tsuka. The handle often has a wrap for a better grip. At the bottom is a blunt metal part called a pommel.

People use the sai in many ways. They use it to stab or strike. They also use it to block or parry. A parry is a way to stop an attack. Some people use the side prongs to catch an opponent's weapon. This helps them disarm the other person. Many people use two sai at once. They hold one in each hand.
