The face is quite flat and has heavy ridges above the eyes. The teeth are also different from ours, with a U-shaped row. Scientists look at these tiny details to guess how the creature lived and ate.

Finding these fossils was a big moment in history. In July 2001, a team in the Djurab Desert of northern Chad found the first remains.

The team included three people from Chad and one person from France. They worked at a place called the Toros-Menalla area. In 2002, Michel Brunet and his colleagues shared what they found with the world. They named the group Sahelanthropus after the Sahel region. They named the species tchadensis to honor the country of Chad.

There are many specific facts about these discoveries. The fossils were found in a place called the TM 266 locality. Scientists believe these bones are about 7 to 6 million years old. The team recovered six different specimens at first. These included a skull, jaw pieces, and several teeth. Later, they found more things like a third premolar and other jaw parts. These were the first ape fossils found outside of eastern or southern Africa. This discovery changed how we think about where early apes lived.

Scientists still argue about one big thing: how they moved.
