Orrorin is an extinct genus of great ape within the tribe Hominini. These ancient primates lived in what is now Kenya. They are found in the Miocene Lukeino Formation and the Pliocene Mabaget Formation. The name Orrorin comes from the Tugen language. It means "original man." This name reflects their importance in studying the history of humans. Understanding Orrorin helps scientists trace how our ancestors changed over millions of years. 
Scientists study the fossils to understand how Orrorin moved. The femur, or thigh bone, provides many clues. The head of the femur is spherical and rotated anteriorly, which means it turns toward the front. The neck of the bone is elongated and has an oval shape. These specific shapes suggest that Orrorin practiced bipedalism, or walking on two legs. However, other bones suggest a different lifestyle too. The proximal phalanx, a bone in the finger, is curved. This curvature indicates that Orrorin was still very good at climbing trees to find food or build shelters. 
There are two known species within the Orrorin genus. The first is Orrorin tugenensis. Its name comes from the Tugen Hills in Kenya. The second is Orrorin praegens. This species was named in 2022. The name praegens roughly means "a group of people who came before." The fossils for Orrorin praegens include the Tabarin mandible. This is a jawbone found in the Pliocene Mabaget Formation. Scientists previously classified this jaw under different names, like Ardipithecus ramidus. Now, they recognize it as a distinct member of the Orrorin genus. 
The discovery of these fossils happened over several decades. Martin Pickford discovered the first part of the holotype in 1974. This first piece was a lower molar tooth. Later, a team led by Brigitte Senut and Martin Pickford found more remains. Starting on October 17, 2000, they found 20 fossils at four different sites. These sites are Cheboit, Aragai, Kapsomin, and Kapcheberek. The fossils at Cheboit and Aragai are the oldest. The fossils at Kapsomin and Kapcheberek are from the upper levels of the formation. 
The fossils of Orrorin tugenensis tell us much about their physical traits. These 20 specimens likely belonged to at least five different individuals. They include a mandible, several isolated teeth, and three fragments of femora. They also include a partial humerus and finger bones. Orrorin was microdont, meaning it had small teeth relative to its body size. This is a trait shared with modern humans. In contrast, species like the australopithecines were megadont, having much larger teeth. Orrorin also had thicker enamel on its teeth than Ardipithecus. 
There is a major debate among scientists about where Orrorin fits on the human family tree. Some researchers believe Orrorin is a direct ancestor to modern humans. They argue it is more similar to Homo sapiens than the famous fossil "Lucy." Lucy is an Australopithecus afarensis. One reason for this is the shape of the femur. However, other scientists disagree with this claim. They point out that the Orrorin femur belonged to a male, while Lucy was female. They suggest Orrorin might be an intermediate between earlier apes and australopithecines. 
Regardless of the debate, Orrorin provides vital information about evolution. It shows that bipedalism may have developed very early in the hominin clade. Orrorin tugenensis appears to have used bipedalism about 6 million years ago. Evidence from the Lukeino Formation shows they lived in dry evergreen forests. This is different from the savanna environments many people assume for early human evolution. Even if their exact place in the family tree is uncertain, Orrorin is a key piece of the puzzle. It helps us see how walking on two legs first began.
