Saarland has a very long and busy history. Long ago, Celtic tribes called the Treveri and Mediomatrici lived here. They left behind a large fortress at Otzenhausen. Later, the Roman Empire made the area part of its province. This brought wealth to the region through Roman villas and villages. After the Romans, the Franks took control of the land. For 1,300 years, the area was part of many different empires.

Local rulers like the counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken held power here.

In the 1800s, the region became important because of coal. The coal deposits helped the heavy industry grow very quickly. This made the area a prize for different nations. After World War I, the League of Nations gave the area to France to govern. In 1935, a vote was held to decide its future. Most people voted to rejoin Germany. After World War II, the land became the Saar Protectorate under French rule.

Historically, the region has been a site of constant movement and change. The land was originally settled by Celtic tribes known as the Treveri and Mediomatrici. They left behind impressive relics, such as a fortress of refuge at Otzenhausen. During the 1st century BC, the Roman Empire incorporated the region into its province of Belgica. This era brought significant wealth to the area. Archaeologists can still find the remains of Roman villas and villages today. After the Roman era ended in the 5th century, the Franks conquered the territory. For the next 1,300 years, the region was part of various groups, including the Carolingian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire.

In the nineteenth century, the region's importance changed due to its natural resources. The area contains rich coal deposits. These deposits led to heavy industrialization in the Saarland. This industrial wealth made the territory a highly contested area between France and Germany. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, the first shots were fired at the Battle of Spicheren. This battle took place on the heights of Spichern, just south of Saarbrücken. Following this conflict, the region became part of the German Empire in 1871. The struggle for control over these industrial resources continued through the early twentieth century.

The political status of Saarland was highly unstable during the interwar period. After World War I, the Treaty of Versailles led to the creation of the Territory of the Saar Basin in 1920. This territory was placed under a 15-year mandate from the League of Nations. While Britain and France occupied the area, France administered it in practice. In 1935, a plebiscite, or a direct vote by the people, was held. The results showed that 90.8 percent of voters favored rejoining Germany. This allowed the territory to be reintegrated into Nazi Germany. The region remained under German administration until the end of World War II in 1945.

After World War II, the Saarland entered a unique period as the Saar Protectorate. It was occupied by France starting in 1945. During this time, the territory functioned with a high degree of independence. It even used its own currency, known as the Saar franc. It also issued its own special postage stamps until 1959.

In 1954, France and West Germany drafted the Saar Statute. This plan aimed to make the Saarland an independent state. However, a plebiscite held in October 1955 rejected this plan by 67.7 percent. Instead, the Saar Treaty allowed the region to join the Federal Republic of Germany. This unification occurred on January 1, 1957. This event was the last major international border change in Europe for over thirty years.

Today, Saarland is a deeply integrated part of the German political and social system. It is a member of SaarLorLux, a euroregion. This organization connects Saarland with parts of France, Luxembourg, and Belgium. The state is also known for being the most religious state in Germany. Approximately 56.8 percent of the population identifies as Catholic. The remaining religious population is largely Protestant, making up about 17.5 percent. The state is divided into six administrative districts: Merzig-Wadern, Neunkirchen, Saarbrücken, Saarlouis, Saarpfalz-Kreis, and Sankt Wendel.
