He formed a coalition government with the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP). This marked his fifth and final term as Prime Minister. Following the sudden death of President Turgut Özal, Demirel ran for the presidency. He won the 1993 election and served as the ninth President of Turkey. He remained in this role until the year 2000. His leadership helped guide the nation through a transformative era.
Demirel's political legacy is defined by his long periods of service.
