Donald Franciszek Tusk is a prominent Polish politician and historian. He currently serves as the Prime Minister of Poland, a position he has held since December 2023.
His political journey began in the late 1980s during a time of great change. Tusk was a co-founder of the Liberal Democratic Congress (KLD), a party focused on free-market ideas.
In 2005, Tusk ran for President of Poland but was defeated by Lech Kaczyński. During this campaign, political opponents raised questions regarding his grandfather, Józef Tusk. Józef had been a luthier and a railway official who was imprisoned in a concentration camp during World War II. He was later conscripted into the Wehrmacht by Nazi authorities before defecting to join the Polish Armed Forces. Despite this setback, Tusk achieved a major victory in the 2007 parliamentary elections. His party, the Civic Platform, won approximately 42% of the vote. This allowed him to become Prime Minister for the first time.
During his first term from 2007 to 2014, Tusk focused on several domestic priorities. He aimed to streamline the bureaucracy and encourage foreign business through free-market policies.
In 2014, Tusk transitioned from domestic politics to a major leadership role in Europe. He was chosen unanimously by European Union leaders to serve as the President of the European Council.
In 2023, Tusk returned to Polish leadership following the elections. His Civic Coalition won 157 seats in the Sejm, making it the second-largest bloc.
Tusk's background in Gdańsk deeply influenced his political philosophy. Growing up in a multilingual, frontier town helped him value diverse perspectives. He studied history at the University of Gdańsk, graduating in 1980. During his studies, he was active in the Student Committee of Solidarity, which opposed the communist regime. He has often stated that his experiences taught him to remain immune to narrow ideologies and nationalism. His career continues to connect Poland to the broader political systems of Europe and the world.
