Ruth did more than just act in front of a camera. She also wrote many plays, books, and film scripts. In 1949, she co-wrote the script for the film Adam's Rib. She worked closely with her husband, writer Garson Kanin. Together, they wrote scripts for famous stars like Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. They even wrote for the movie Pat and Mike in 1952. Her writing was so good that she earned three Academy Award nominations. She even wrote a novel called Shady Lady in 1982.

Her journey began in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was born there on October 30, 1896. As a young girl, she wrote to her favorite actresses for autographs. A reply from an actress named Hazel Dawn inspired her to act. Her father was worried about her career choice. However, he took her to New York in 1914. There, she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She made her Broadway debut that same year in a production of Peter Pan.

Ruth earned many important awards for her hard work. She won an Academy Award for acting in the 1969 film Rosemary's Baby. She was 72 years old when she received this honor. She also won a Golden Globe Award for that same role.

Even in her 80s, Ruth stayed very busy with her work. She died in 1985 at the age of 88. People in her hometown of Quincy even named an amphitheater after her. Her life shows how much one person can do through art.
