Pilots use it to take off and land. Some runways are made of hard concrete or asphalt. Others are natural, like grass, dirt, or sand.

Seaplanes use paths on water called waterways.

Runways are built to face the wind. Engineers look at the wind direction before building. This is called the prevailing wind.

If a plane flies into the wind, it gets more lift. Lift is the force that helps a plane fly. Flying into the wind lets a plane take off in a shorter distance. It also helps the plane land at a slower speed.

Runways have names made of numbers. These numbers come from the direction the runway points. A runway named 09 points east. A runway named 18 points south.

If a runway has a twin next to it, we add a letter. We use L for left, C for center, or R for right.
