Rugby sevens is a fast-paced variant of rugby union.

It is often called simply "sevens" by fans and players. While regular rugby union involves 15 players per side, sevens uses only seven. This smaller number of players creates a much more open game. There is more space on the field for athletes to run. Because of this space, scoring happens much more frequently than in the 15-player game. Many people view sevens tournaments as festive celebrations.

These events often feel like festivals rather than stern competitions. Fans frequently wear fancy dress to show their support. This relaxed atmosphere makes the sport a popular end-of-season diversion.

The mechanics of a sevens match are designed for speed.

A standard match consists of two seven-minute halves. There is a short two-minute break at half-time. This is much shorter than the ten-minute break in regular rugby. To reduce injuries, officials limited final-round matches to seven-minute halves in 2017. If a match ends in a tie, teams play "golden point" extra time. This extra time is played in multiple five-minute periods. The first team to score in this period wins the match.

Specific rules change how the game is played on the field.

In a scrum, which is a way to restart play, only three players from each team participate. This is much smaller than the eight-player scrums used in rugby union. Teams are composed of three forwards and four backs. Unlike the 15-player game, player numbers in sevens are very flexible. A squad of twelve players might have any number assigned to any position. In defense, a team might use a line of six defenders. They often place one "sweeper" behind that line to catch runners.

The scoring system remains the same as traditional rugby union. A try is worth five points. A penalty or a drop goal is worth three points. A conversion attempt, which follows a try, is worth two points. However, sevens players must take conversions differently. All conversion attempts must be drop-kicked instead of place-kicked. Players must also complete the conversion within 30 seconds of scoring. This rule helps keep the game moving without long delays. In major tournaments, special in-goal touch judges help watch these kicks.

The history of the sport traces back to Scotland.

In the 1860s and 1870s, Hely Hutchinson Almond used short-sided matches at Loretto School. He wanted his students to improve their passing skills. He believed a collective style of play would beat individualistic teams. Later, in 1883, Ned Haig and David Sanderson created the Melrose Sevens. They were butchers from the town of Melrose. They organized the tournament to raise funds for the Melrose RFC club. The first match was played at The Greenyards. The event was very successful and is still played every year.

Rugby sevens has since become a global phenomenon.

It is highly popular in the South Pacific, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The Hong Kong Sevens tournament was vital for spreading the game in Asia. The sport has reached many major international stages. It was included in the Commonwealth Games in 1998. A women's tournament was added to those games in 2018. Most notably, rugby sevens debuted at the Summer Olympics in 2016. It is now one of the most widely played forms of rugby.

The scale of the sport is impressive.

The Melrose Sevens tournament attracts about 12,000 spectators annually. During its centenary in 1983, the event drew 17,500 fans. Because tournaments can be finished in a single day or weekend, they are easy to organize. Many competitions offer multiple trophies, such as a cup, plate, bowl, or shield. This allows teams of different skill levels to win something. This structure helps maintain interest and participation across many different countries and cultures.
