Long ago, schools in the South were not fair. Black children and white children went to different schools. In 1960, Ruby was six years old. She wanted to attend William Frantz Elementary School.

This school was only for white children. Ruby was the first Black child to go there.

Many people were angry about this change. They stood outside the school and shouted. Because of this, federal marshals had to walk with Ruby. They kept her safe while she went to class.
