He was known for a very powerful and special voice. Many of his songs were dark, emotional ballads. These are songs that show deep feelings. At a time when most male singers acted very strong, Roy showed vulnerability. This meant he was not afraid to show his softer side. On stage, he had a very specific look. He wore black clothes and dark sunglasses.

He also had black hair that he dyed himself. He did not move much while he performed. This helped the audience focus on his incredible singing.

Music was a huge part of Roy's life from the start. His father gave him a guitar for his sixth birthday. Roy learned to play it from his father and older brother. By the age of seven, music was his main focus.

As a teenager, he started his first band called the Wink Westerners. This group played country and western swing music. They even played on local radio and television. In 1955, he formed a new band called the Teen Kings. He began to use the guitar to accompany his singing instead of just playing it. This helped him become a true frontman.

Roy's journey to fame had many interesting steps. He recorded his first song, "Ooby Dooby," in 1956.

He found his greatest success later with Monument Records. From 1960 to 1966, twenty-two of his songs reached the top 40 on the Billboard charts. He wrote almost all of his own big hits. These included "Only the Lonely" and the famous "Oh, Pretty Woman."
