The name means "head of the year." It marks the start of the civil year. It is also a time to remember the creation of Adam and Eve.

This holiday begins a ten-day period. This time is for thinking about how to be better. It ends with a day called Yom Kippur. During Rosh Hashanah, many people go to a synagogue. They say special prayers. One theme is crowning God as king.

A big part of the holiday is the shofar.

A shofar is a horn made from a ram. Its loud sound is like a wake-up call. It tells people to look at their ways. People also eat sweet foods. They might eat apples dipped in honey. This shows they want a sweet year ahead.

Some people do a ritual called Tashlich. They go to water to say prayers. They might throw bread or stones into the water. This is a way to show they are casting away sins.
