He was a famous actor, director, and screenwriter. During the 1910s, he was one of the most popular comedians in Hollywood. He was also one of the highest-paid actors in the business. In 1920, he signed a huge contract with Paramount Pictures. This deal was worth $1 million a year.

He was a pioneer who helped shape early movie comedy.

Arbuckle was known for being very agile despite his large size.

He could perform graceful backward somersaults and light steps. He often performed fast-paced chase scenes and sight gags. He is even credited with making the "pie in the face" a famous comedy gag. This happened in a 1913 film called A Noise from the Deep. He worked closely with his frequent partner, Mabel Normand.

His talent helped many other stars find success in movies.

His career began long before he reached the big screen.

He was born in Smith Center, Kansas, in 1887. As a young boy, he performed on stage in Santa Ana, California. He later worked in vaudeville, which is a type of live stage show. A funny accident during a talent show helped start his career. He accidentally tumbled into an orchestra pit during a performance. This unexpected move made the audience love him. He then traveled to places like China and Japan to perform.

Arbuckle's life changed during a difficult time in 1921.

He was involved in a legal case following a party at the St. Francis Hotel. A woman named Virginia Rappe died after the event. Arbuckle was accused of causing her death. He went through three different trials between 1921 and 1922. The first two trials ended without a decision from the jury. In the third trial, the jury found him not guilty. They even wrote him a note to apologize for his treatment.

Even though he was cleared, the scandal hurt his movie career.
