Born Ronald James Padavona on July 10, 1942, he became one of the most influential singers in rock history. He was known for a powerful and versatile vocal range. This allowed him to perform both intense hard rock and lighter ballads. His impact on the culture of heavy metal was significant. He is famously credited with popularizing the "devil horns" hand gesture among metal fans.

Dio's unique musical identity was shaped by his personal interests and upbringing. He was deeply influenced by opera and the American tenor Mario Lanza. He also enjoyed romantic fantasy literature, such as the works of Sir Walter Scott and Arthurian legends. These interests led him to write lyrics with medieval themes. Even his famous hand gesture had a personal origin. Dio stated the sign came from an Italian apotropaic gesture used by his grandmother. This gesture was intended to ward off bad luck or evil.

His musical training began at age five when he learned the trumpet. Although he never received formal vocal training, he used specific techniques to master his singing. He attributed his vocal control to the breathing techniques he learned as a trumpet player. Before becoming a famous singer, he also played the bass guitar. His early career involved several groups in New York. These included the Vegas Kings, which later became Ronnie and the Rumblers and Ronnie and the Redcaps. By 1967, he formed the rock band Elf, where he sang and played bass.

Dio's rise to major stardom occurred through several high-profile band memberships. In 1975, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore recruited him to join the band Rainbow. During this period, Dio recorded three studio albums, including the self-titled debut. He provided all the lyrical authorship for these recordings. In 1979, he joined Black Sabbath to replace singer Ozzy Osbourne. This era produced successful albums like Heaven & Hell in 1980 and Mob Rules in 1981. He later returned to Black Sabbath in 1991 to record the album Dehumanizer.

In 1982, Dio formed his own eponymous band, Dio. This group featured musicians like guitarist Vivian Campbell and bassist Jimmy Bain. The band released ten albums in total, with Master of the Moon being the final release in 2004. Their 1983 debut, Holy Diver, included hit singles like "Rainbow in the Dark." Two of the band's albums were certified platinum by the RIAA.

Later, in 2006, he reunited with former Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice. They formed a group called Heaven & Hell to tour and record new music.

Throughout his career, Dio received many honors for his talent. In 2006, Classic Rock Magazine awarded him the "Metal Guru Award." He was also named "Best Metal Singer" at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2010. Music journalist Sacha Jenkins ranked him as the best vocalist in the genre in 2013. His ability to connect with audiences was evident through his extensive world tours. Even when facing health challenges, his dedication to music remained a central part of his life. In November 2009, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
