Beyond adult cinema, Jeremy became a recognizable figure in mainstream pop culture. He appeared in various movies, television shows, and music videos. A biographical documentary titled "Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy" was released in 2001 to explore his life and legacy.
Jeremy's early life began in Queens, New York City. He was born on March 12, 1953, into a middle-class Jewish family. His father, Arnold, was a physicist and a professor at Queens College. His mother was a book editor who served in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. Jeremy attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. He later attended Queens College, where he earned a master's degree. He originally studied theater and education. He even began his career in the teaching profession before moving to New York to pursue acting on Broadway.
After his time on Broadway, Jeremy sought more stable work. He found success posing for Playgirl magazine. This opportunity served as a springboard into the adult film industry. He viewed this work as a reliable way to support himself. During this era, he earned the nickname "The Hedgehog."
In 1979, while filming near Lake Arrowhead in the California mountains, a sudden blizzard occurred. Jeremy had arrived in only a T-shirt and shorts. The extreme cold caused his body hair to stand on end. Fellow actor William Margold remarked that he looked like a walking hedgehog.
Jeremy achieved significant professional milestones in the adult industry. He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for "Most Appearances in Adult Films." The Internet Adult Film Database (IAFD) credits him with performing in more than 2,000 films. Additionally, he directed 285 films. These numbers are significantly higher than other stars in the field. For example, the AVN's second-highest-ranked male star, John Holmes, has 384 acting credits. Jeremy's prolific output made him one of the most frequent performers in the history of the industry.
His influence extended into many different forms of media. In music, he appeared in videos for bands such as Guns N' Roses, LMFAO, and Sublime. He even released a rap single titled "Freak of the Week," which reached number 95 on the Billboard rap charts. In television, he appeared on shows like "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Surreal Life." He also made cameos in popular series like "Family Guy" and "Chappelle's Show." The court found him mentally unfit to stand trial. This decision was based on a diagnosis of "incurable neurocognitive decline."
