Roman mythology is the body of myths belonging to ancient Rome.

These stories appeared in Roman literature and visual arts. They functioned as a form of Roman folklore. Many Romans treated these narratives as actual history. They accepted these stories even when they included supernatural elements. These myths often focused on politics and morality. They explored how a person's integrity related to their duty to the state. Heroism served as a central theme throughout these tales.

The structure of Roman myth is a complex blend of different traditions. It drew from the mythology of the Italic peoples. It also shared themes with Proto-Indo-European mythology. During the Hellenistic period, Roman mythology integrated heavily with Greek mythology.

The Romans identified their gods with Greek deities. They reinterpreted Greek myths under Roman names. This combined tradition is known as classical mythology. Roman interpretations often had more influence on art than the original Greek sources. For example, Ovid’s Metamorphoses became a canonical version of these myths.

One major source is the Aeneid by Virgil. This epic tells how the Trojan prince Aeneas became an ancestor to Romulus and Remus. Through this genealogy, the Trojans became the mythical ancestors of Rome. Other legends focus on the rise of the city through human action. These stories often involve a sense of divinely ordered destiny. They explain how the Roman government developed according to divine law.

Many myths served specific political or moral purposes.

The story of the Sabine women explains how alliances formed Roman culture. The legend of Numa Pompilius describes the establishment of religious institutions. Lucretia’s story explains the overthrow of the monarchy and the start of the Republic. Other tales like Horatius at the bridge emphasize individual valor. Even the story of Mucius Scaevola shows loyalty through a dramatic act. These narratives helped define the expectations of Roman citizenship.

Roman religion prioritized ritual and cultus over complex theology.

While they lacked a single holy scripture, they used priestly literature. The College of Pontiffs kept books called libri and commentaries. These contained prayers and rulings on religious law. Some of this writing was an arcane form called occultum genus litterarum. Only priests had access to these secret texts. The Sibylline books were another important source for prophecies regarding Rome's destiny.

The Roman pantheon included various groupings of deities. The earliest period featured the Archaic Triad of Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus. Later, the Capitoline Triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva became central to official religion. This new triad was unusual because it included two female deities.

Other groups like the Aventine Triad developed alongside the rise of the plebeians. These different groupings reflected changes in Roman social and political life.

Many gods were specialists for the practical needs of daily life.

The Romans invoked specific deities for every stage of farming. Janus and Vesta guarded the door and the hearth. Ceres was responsible for the growth of grain. Saturn was linked to the act of sowing. Jupiter acted as a protector of military activities beyond Roman borders. Even the goddess Diana had famous cult sites like those of Diana Nemorensis. These gods allowed the Romans to navigate their world through precise ritual and belief.
