A Roman legion was the largest unit in the Roman army.

These groups were made of Roman citizens called legionaries. They were the elite heavy infantry for the Roman Empire. While legions were very important, they were not the whole army. Most of the army actually consisted of people called auxiliaries. These were non-citizens who provided extra infantry and most of the cavalry.

Legions were organized into smaller groups to work well together. During the late Republic, a legion was split into ten cohorts. Each cohort was made of several groups called centuries. In one system, a century had 80 legionaries. One special cohort was often double the strength of the others. These large cohorts could have 800 men in them.

ways of organizing the army changed many times over the years. In the early Roman Kingdom, forces were grouped into units of 100 men. During the Republic, the army was often organized by wealth. The poorest citizens were in the first line of battle. Later, the system changed to focus on age and experience instead. This new way helped the soldiers fight more effectively.

Numbers and names help us see how much the legions changed. In the early Republic, a legion had about 4,200 infantry and 300 cavalry. By the Imperial period, the size grew to about 5,280 men. One famous unit was Legio V Macedonica, which Augustus founded in 43 BC. It was so long-lasting that it was still in Egypt in the seventh century. However, some legions did not last, like the three lost in the Varian Disaster in AD 9.

Understanding the legion helps us see how Rome grew so large. The large legions helped the empire expand across many lands. By the fourth century AD, the legions became much smaller units. They went from thousands of men down to about 1,000 or 1,500. These smaller units were better for guarding long borders. This change helped the army cover more territory at once.
