These men were all citizens of Rome. They were known as legionaries. Most legions had about 5,000 men.

In the early days, the groups were organized by wealth. The poorest men were in the first line. Later, the groups changed. They were organized by age and skill instead. This helped the army work better.

A legion had different types of soldiers. Some men were heavy infantry. They used large shields and swords. Other men were called auxiliaries. These were not Roman citizens. They provided most of the horse riders, or cavalry.

Legions were split into smaller groups called cohorts. A legion often had ten cohorts. Over time, the size of the legion changed. In the fourth century, legions became much smaller. They had only about 1,000 to 1,500 men. This helped them guard more land.
