Roger Eugene Ailes was a prominent American television executive and media consultant. He held several high-level leadership positions within the media industry. Ailes served as the chairman and CEO of Fox News. He also led Fox Television Stations and 20th Television. He is widely recognized for his significant influence on conservative media and the American conservative movement. His strategic work helped shape how political information reached the public.

Ailes's career followed a path from local television production to national political influence. He began his work in Cleveland and Philadelphia. He started as a production assistant at KYW-TV in 1961. By 1965, he was a producer for The Mike Douglas Show. He later became an executive producer for that same program. In 1967 and 1968, he earned Emmy Awards for his work on the show. This period of his life provided the foundation for his future success in media management.

A major turning point occurred in 1967 during a discussion with Richard Nixon. Nixon believed that television was merely a gimmick for politics. However, Ailes saw the power of the medium. Nixon later hired Ailes as his Executive Producer for television. This role marked Ailes's first major venture into the political spotlight. He worked to frame national campaign issues through televised media. This pioneering work was later described in the book The Selling of the President 1968 by Joe McGinniss.

After his early work with Nixon, Ailes became a highly sought-after political consultant. He worked on the 1984 campaign to reelect Ronald Reagan.

In the late 1980s, he helped guide George H. W. Bush to victory. He was credited with helping Bush win both the Republican primaries and the general election over Michael Dukakis. Ailes even developed the "Orchestra Pit Theory" regarding how news media covers politics. His expertise in communication led him to write two books with Jon Kraushar. These books were titled You Are the Message and You Are the Message: Getting What You Want by Being Who You Are.

In 1996, Ailes moved into a massive leadership role at Fox News. He was hired by News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch to be the CEO. Ailes helped transform the network into a major force in cable news. He also chaired the Fox Television Stations Group starting in 2005. During his tenure, he implemented standardized graphics and redesigned studios for Fox News. He also oversaw the launch of new programs like The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. By the 2012 fiscal year, his annual earnings reached approximately $21 million, including bonuses.

Despite his professional success, Ailes's career ended due to serious allegations of misconduct. In July 2016, Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against him. She alleged she was fired after rejecting his advances. This lawsuit prompted more than a dozen other female employees to come forward. Other women, such as Megyn Kelly and Andrea Tantaros, also shared accounts of their experiences. Kelly alleged that Ailes made unwanted sexual advances toward her early in her career. These collective allegations led to an internal review by 21st Century Fox.

The internal review eventually led to Ailes's resignation from Fox News on July 21, 2016. The company gave him an ultimatum to resign or be fired. Upon leaving, Ailes received approximately $40 million as part of an exit agreement. He stated in a letter that he did not want to be a distraction to the network. Following his departure, Rupert Murdoch took over as chairman and interim CEO. Ailes's career remains a subject of intense study regarding media power and corporate culture.

Ailes's personal life was also affected by a medical condition called hemophilia. Hemophilia is a disorder where the body has a reduced ability to produce blood clots. This condition caused him to be hospitalized frequently during his youth in Warren, Ohio. Hemophilia played a role in his death on May 18, 2017. He died at age 77 following a subdural hematoma, which is a collection of blood between the brain and its outer covering. The hemophilia condition aggravated this specific medical event.
