Robert Penn Warren was a very famous American writer. He wrote many different kinds of books. He was a poet, a novelist, and a critic. He also worked as a professor at Yale University.

People remember him for his great skill with words. He was a leader in a group called New Criticism. This group changed how people study literature. He also helped start a journal called The Southern Review in 1935. This journal was made with his friend Cleanth Brooks.

Warren's life was full of many different learning steps. He was born in Guthrie, Kentucky, in 1905. He went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated there in 1925 with many honors.

Later, he studied at the University of California, Berkeley. He even went to England as a Rhodes Scholar. He studied at New College, Oxford, until 1930. He also traveled to Italy to study there. These many places helped him become a great thinker.

His writing changed as he grew older. Early in his life, he joined a group called the Southern Agrarians. In 1936, he wrote a piece called "The Briar Patch." At that time, he held some old ideas about race.

However, Warren changed his mind later in life. In 1956, he wrote about the civil rights movement. He became a strong supporter of racial integration. He even interviewed leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. He wanted to help people understand these important changes.

Warren won many of the highest awards in America. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel, All the King's Men, in 1947.

He is the only person to win Pulitzers for both fiction and poetry. He won two more Pulitzer Prizes for his poetry. One was in 1958 and another was in 1979. President Jimmy Carter gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980. He also received the National Medal of Arts. These awards show how much people valued his work.

Today, we still see his impact on the world. The United States Postal Service made a stamp for his 100th birthday.

Vanderbilt University even has a center named after him. It is called the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. His books are still used by students to learn about writing. His son and daughter also carry on his family name. His many poems and stories stay important to readers everywhere.
