Robert Paxton is a famous historian. He studies how people and governments act. He was born in Virginia in 1932. He studied at many great schools. Later, he taught at Columbia University.

Paxton is known for a big book about France. It was written in 1972. This book was about a time called Vichy France. During World War II, France had a special government. Many people thought this government did not help the Nazis. Paxton showed this was not true. He proved the French state helped move Jewish people to camps. This was a hard truth. His book changed how people see history.

Some people in France were very angry at first. They did not like his new ideas. But many young people read his work. They wanted to know the real story.

Paxton also studies fascism. Fascism is a way some leaders gain power. He says these groups often feel their nation is weak. They may use force to reach their goals. He wrote about this in his books. He even shared his thoughts on new leaders in the United States. He also loves to watch birds.
