This means he helped start the science of traveling into space. He worked alongside other famous names like Robert H. Goddard. His many ideas changed how we fly through the air.

Robert worked hard to make planes fly better. He first tried using a glider near Calais. This did not work because he did not fully understand it. He then created the aileron to help planes turn. To encourage the field, he helped establish the Prix REP-Hirsch. He co-founded this award with banker André-Louis Hirsch in 1928. It was the world's first prize for astronautics. The award recognized original scientific work that advanced space travel. It was managed by a committee that included experts like Jean Perrin. The prize was awarded for ten years before becoming the International Astronautics Prize in 1936. Notable winners included Hermann Oberth in 1929. This award helped stimulate global interest in the emerging science of space exploration.

Esnault-Pelterie's legacy is preserved in many ways today. He filed approximately 120 patents in many different fields. These included metallurgy, automobile suspension, and fuel pumps. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the International Space Hall of Fame. His impact is even visible on other worlds, as a crater on the Moon is named the Esnault-Pelterie crater. He remains a central figure in the history of how humans moved from the ground to the stars.
