Caro’s method of writing relies on a process called exhaustive research. He does not simply summarize known facts; he seeks to find the hidden mechanics of power. For his biography of Robert Moses, he conducted 522 individual interviews. This included several sessions with Moses himself and many with his long-term staff. His wife, Ina Caro, served as his research assistant during this period. To support his work, she even sold their family home to provide financial stability.

One of his most significant works is *The Power Broker*, published in 1974. This book is a biography of Robert Moses, a powerful New York urban planner. Caro studied how Moses shaped the city through massive infrastructure projects. The Modern Library selected this work as one of the hundred greatest nonfiction books of the twentieth century. It remains a seminal text for understanding urban planning and political influence. The book examines how Moses wielded immense authority without ever being an elected official.

Following this success, Caro began his massive project titled *The Years of Lyndon Johnson*. This series aims to chronicle the entire life and presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson. The project was originally intended to be a trilogy but expanded to five volumes. He has completed four volumes so far, including *The Path to Power* (1982) and *The Passage of Power* (2012). The final, as-yet-unpublished volume will cover Johnson's later years and the Vietnam War.

As of March 2025, he had completed 980 pages of this fifth volume.

Caro’s early life shaped his interest in writing and detail. He was born in New York City to Jewish parents. He attended the Horace Mann School in the Bronx after his mother passed away. Later, he studied English at Princeton University, graduating *cum laude* in 1957. During his time at Princeton, he wrote a senior thesis on Ernest Hemingway. The thesis was so long that the university established a maximum length for future student papers. This new regulation was officially named "the Caro rule."

His professional career began in journalism, which provided the foundation for his biographies. He worked as a reporter for the *New Brunswick Daily Home News* in New Jersey. He also spent six years as an investigative reporter for the Long Island newspaper *Newsday*. During this time, he wrote a series about a proposed bridge across Long Island Sound. This reporting influenced a powerful governor to reconsider the project. This experience served as a transformational moment, leading him to investigate how non-elected figures gain power.

Throughout his career, Caro has received numerous prestigious honors. He has won two Pulitzer Prizes in the category of Biography. He has also received two National Book Awards, including one for Lifetime Achievement. In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal.
