He is widely recognized as both a writer and an artist. Liefeld is most famous for co-creating iconic characters. He created Cable with writer Louise Simonson. He also co-created Deadpool with writer Fabian Nicieza. His work has shaped the landscape of modern superhero stories. Throughout his career, he has remained a significant and sometimes controversial figure. This controversy stems from his specific drawing style, his business practices, and his public comments.

Liefeld's journey began with a deep passion for visual storytelling. As a child, he practiced by tracing artwork from existing comic books.

During high school, he studied fundamental art courses to build his skills. He also attended comic book conventions at the Disneyland Hotel. There, he met legendary creators like George Pérez and John Romita Jr. Artists such as Pérez, John Byrne, and Frank Miller became major influences on him. He also noted the influence of artist Arthur Adams on his work.

His professional career started with small publishers and odd jobs. After high school, he worked as a pizza delivery man and a construction worker.

He sent art samples to Megaton Comics around 1985. Editor Gary Carlson reviewed his work. Carlson noted that Liefeld's anatomy was sometimes "goofy," but his storytelling was very clear. Liefeld's own superhero team, Youngblood, made its first appearance in Megaton Explosion #1 in June 1987. This early work helped him build the portfolio needed for larger companies.

Liefeld eventually moved into the mainstream industry with DC and Marvel Comics. He showed his samples to editors at a convention in San Francisco. Editor Dick Giordano at DC Comics requested more samples from him. This led to his first published story in a DC Comics Bonus Book in 1988. He also drew the Hawk and Dove miniseries for DC. In one issue, he oriented the panels sideways to represent a chaos dimension. This required readers to turn the book to read it. Later, he joined Marvel Comics, where he became a major success.

At Marvel, Liefeld worked on The New Mutants starting in 1989. He is credited with turning this low-selling title into a massive financial success.

By issue #98, he had full creative control over the series. He handled the penciling, inking, and plotting. This work led to the creation of X-Force in 1991. The debut issue of X-Force sold four million copies. This set an industry-wide record. As of 2013, X-Force #1 remained the second highest-selling comic book in history.

In 1992, Liefeld helped change how the comic book industry functioned. He left Marvel to co-found Image Comics with several other popular illustrators.

These founders included Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Whilce Portacio, Jim Valentino, and Marc Silvestri. This move allowed creators to own their own work rather than the publishers owning it. Liefeld's Youngblood #1 was the very first book published by Image Comics.

He also established his own studio called Extreme Studios under the Image banner.

Liefeld's career has included unique moments in popular culture. In 1990, he appeared in a Levi's television commercial directed by Spike Lee. The commercial was part of a campaign for 501 button fly jeans. He was also interviewed by Stan Lee in the documentary series The Comic Book Greats.
