She is a highly skilled actress, dancer, and singer. Moreno is recognized as one of the last remaining stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her talent has allowed her to work across many different media, including film, television, and Broadway theater. She has achieved a level of success that very few performers ever reach. This includes winning the "EGOT," which is a term for winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.

She also holds the Triple Crown of Acting, a title for those who win major awards in film, television, and theater.

Moreno's journey began with significant moves and early training. She was born Rosa Dolores Alverío Marcano on December 11, 1931, in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Her mother, Rosa María, was a seamstress, and her father, Francisco José Alverío, was a farmer. In 1936, her mother moved her to New York City. While in New York, she took dancing lessons from a Spanish dancer named Paco Cansino. By age 11, she was providing voices for Spanish-language versions of American films. By age 13, she earned her first Broadway role in the production Skydrift. This early success caught the attention of Hollywood talent scouts.

Her film career grew during the later years of the Golden Age of Hollywood. After moving to California, she signed a contract with MGM. The studio abbreviated her first name to Rita and she performed as Rosita Moreno. Her first film was So Young, So Bad in 1950. In 1952, she appeared in the musical comedy Singin' in the Rain. In that film, she played a silent film star named Zelda Zanders. She praised Gene Kelly for casting her in a role that was not a stereotype. In 1954, she became the first Puerto Rican person featured on the cover of Life magazine.

She played the role of Anita in this musical adaptation. Her performance was described by critics as "spitfire" and "fiery." For this role, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This achievement made her the first Hispanic woman to win an Academy Award. Despite this success, she felt frustrated by stereotypical roles in Hollywood. This led her to seek work in London and return to Broadway theater.

Her theatrical work brought even more prestigious awards. In 1975, she starred as Googie Gomez in the musical The Ritz. This performance earned her the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

For her work on that show, she won a Grammy Award for Best Album for Children in 1972.

Moreno's versatility is shown through her many different television roles. She won two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards in 1977 and 1978.
