These rings are very faint. They are mostly made of dust. This was the third ring system found in our solar system. Scientists first saw them in 1979 using the Voyager 1 probe.

The rings have four main parts. The first is the halo ring. It is a thick ring of tiny particles. The second is the main ring. This ring is very thin and bright. The other two are the gossamer rings. They are wide and faint. They are named after the moons Amalthea and Thebe.

How do these rings form? Dust comes from moons like Metis and Adrastea. This happens when things crash into the moons at high speeds. The crashes throw dust into space. This dust stays in the rings. Most of the main ring looks red. The halo ring looks blue. We do not know how old the rings are. They may have been there since Jupiter first formed.
