A rifle is a long-barreled firearm made for accurate shooting. Most rifles are designed to be held with both hands. They also have a buttstock to brace against the shoulder for stability.

People use rifles for many different things today. They are used in warfare and law enforcement. They are also used for hunting and target shooting sports. This tool is much more precise than older weapons.

What makes a rifle special is a feature called rifling. This is a pattern of spiral grooves cut inside the barrel. The raised areas between these grooves are called lands.

As a projectile moves down the barrel, the lands touch it. This action exerts torque, which makes the projectile spin. This spin provides gyroscopic stability as it flies through the air. This helps the bullet stay accurate over a long range.

History shows that rifling was a major improvement over smoothbore weapons. Older guns like muskets had smooth barrels. This made the direction of the shot very unpredictable. Early experiments with grooved barrels happened in Europe during the 1400s. Some say Gaspard Kollner of Vienna helped develop them.

Later, an English mathematician named Benjamin Robins studied how bullets move. He found that long bullets slice through the air easily. This helped people understand why rifles were so much better.

In the 1700s, settlers in Pennsylvania developed the famous long rifle.

These rifles had longer barrels and tighter bores than common muskets. One early maker was a German immigrant named Jacob Dickert. During the American Revolution, units like Morgan's Riflemen used these tools. They were very helpful during the Battle of Saratoga. In the 1840s, the Minié ball was invented to help loading. This invention allowed rifles to replace muskets on the battlefield.

Modern rifles come in many different types. Some are single-shot, while others are bolt-action. Semi-automatic rifles fire one shot for each trigger pull.

Some automatic rifles can fire many rounds with one squeeze. This can make them similar to machine guns. However, rifles are usually lighter and more mobile than machine guns. Most rifles are fed by magazines to hold ammunition. This makes them useful tools for individual people to use.
