Imagine a tiny ant crawling on a curved surface.

To the ant, the path feels the same whether the surface is flat or bent. This is called intrinsic geometry. It means the ant only cares about the space right under its feet. It does not care how the shape sits in a larger room.

A mathematician named Bernhard Riemann studied these ideas.

He lived in the 19th century. Riemann looked at shapes called manifolds. These can be simple surfaces or much bigger spaces. He found a way to measure distances on these shapes. We call this a Riemannian metric. This metric helps us find lengths, angles, and even volume.

Riemann's work was very important. It helped Albert Einstein explain how gravity works. This is called the general theory of relativity. His ideas also helped other types of math. For example, they helped with group theory and analysis. Today, we use these tools to study many different types of shapes. We can even use them to study how crystals are made. The math shows us how shapes can bend and change.
