Riemann sum

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine a curvy line drawn on a graph. Finding the exact area underneath that curve is a hard job. Most lines are not straight, so they do not make perfect squares. A Riemann sum is a way to make a very good guess at that area. This method is used in numerical integration, which is a way to measure functions on a graph. It is also called the rectangle rule. You can even use it to estimate the length of curves.

To make this guess, you must first divide the space into small parts. These parts are called subintervals. You can turn these parts into shapes like rectangles, trapezoids, or even parabolas. Once you have these shapes, you find the area of each one. Then, you add all those small areas together to get a total sum. Because these shapes might not fit the curve perfectly, there is often an error. You can make this error smaller by using more, smaller shapes. As the shapes get tiny, the sum gets closer to the true area.

There are several ways to choose the height of your shapes. The left rule uses the height at the left side of each part. The right rule uses the height at the right side. If you use the middle of the part, it is called the midpoint rule. The midpoint rule is often the most accurate of these three. Another way is the trapezoidal rule, which averages the left and right heights. This method is one of the simplest ways to use weighted averages.

This idea is named after Bernhard Riemann. He was a mathematician from Germany who lived in the nineteenth century. His work helps us understand the Riemann integral. This is the final value you get when the shapes become infinitely small. When the width of the shapes goes to zero, the sum approaches the true area. If a function is Riemann integrable, all these different sums will eventually reach the same number. This is a very important idea in math.

Riemann sums can work in more than one dimension too. In two dimensions, you divide a flat space into small cells. You then multiply the size of each cell by the function value. In three dimensions, you use small cells to measure volume. You can even do this for any number of dimensions. This makes the idea very powerful for many different types of math problems. It helps us measure things that are far too complex to count by hand.
