He is famous for sharing his thoughts on movies with people everywhere. For 39 years, he worked for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. He started there in 1986 as an assistant. Later, he became a news reporter and a columnist. He even wrote seven different books about movies and sports. People enjoy his work because he makes talking about art feel easy. He wants everyone to understand why a story matters.

Roeper has many ways to share his opinions. He often uses a four-star rating system for movies. A film with four stars is considered exceptional or great. A film with only one star has many flaws. He also uses a thumbs-up or thumbs-down method. This comes from a famous tradition of movie critics. He uses these tools to talk about acting and stories. This helps his readers decide which movies to watch.

His journey into media began in a loving home in Chicago. His mother took him to the library every single week. These visits helped him develop a deep love for reading. He later went to Illinois State University to study mass communication. While in college, he worked at a student radio station. His advisor, Dwight Brooks, taught him how to control his breath. This helped him learn how to speak clearly on the air.

Roeper has worked on many different types of shows. From 2000 to 2008, he co-hosted the TV series At the Movies. He worked alongside the famous critic Roger Ebert. After Gene Siskel died, Roeper helped lead the program. He also hosted a radio show called The Roe and Roeper Show. In 2015, he joined the morning show Good Day Chicago. He even appeared on the popular TV show Top Chef.

Today, Roeper continues to connect with fans through new technology. He hosts a podcast called The Richard Roeper Show. He also started a new podcast in 2025 called The Movie of Your Life. This show looks at how movies connect to our own lives. He is also a regular contributor to the website RogerEbert.com. Even though he left his long job at the newspaper, he still loves film. He remains a very important voice in the world of movies.
