It tells a dramatic story about the life of a real English king. The play focuses on the final two years of his reign from 1398 to 1400.

It is a story of power, mistakes, and how a kingdom changes. Many people love this play because it shows how a leader can lose everything. It explores how one person's choices can change the history of a whole nation.

The story begins with King Richard sitting on his throne. He must act as a judge for two noblemen. One man is Henry Bolingbroke and the other is Thomas Mowbray. They are fighting over serious accusations like theft and murder.

Instead of letting them fight a duel, the king sends them away. This choice is seen as a big mistake for the king. It shows he is indecisive and acts in ways that seem unfair.

As the story moves on, the king makes more choices that anger his people. After a nobleman named John of Gaunt dies, Richard takes his land and money. This makes the other nobles very angry at the king. They believe he is wasting England's money and being unfair to the common people. They decide to help Bolingbroke return to England to take the throne. Bolingbroke leads an army and eventually forces Richard to give up his crown.

Shakespeare used real history to write this play. He likely used a book called Holinshed's Chronicles as his main source.

This book was a history of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The play has appeared in many different printed versions over the years. Some early versions from 1597 and 1598 did not include the scene where the king gives up his crown. The First Folio, published in 1623, is another very important version of the text.

This play is the start of a much larger group of stories. This group is called the Henriad tetralogy. It includes four plays that follow the kings who came after Richard. These stories include Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V. By reading this play, you are seeing the beginning of a long political journey. It connects the old ways of ruling to the newer ways of leading a country.
