He must settle a fight between two noblemen. One man is Henry Bolingbroke. The king makes a choice that causes big problems. He stops a duel and sends the men away. This choice shows that Richard can be unsure.

After a nobleman named John of Gaunt dies, Richard takes his money. This makes the other nobles very angry. They help Bolingbroke return to England to take the throne.

Richard loses his crown in a public ceremony. Bolingbroke becomes King Henry IV. Richard is sent to a prison at Pomfret. A man named Sir Piers Exton kills the king in his cell. The new king feels great sorrow. He mourns over the king's coffin at the end. This play is part of a larger set of stories. These stories follow the kings who came after Richard.
