Arkwright's machines transformed how cotton became thread. He first improved a device called a carding engine. He patented his improved version in 1775. This machine converted raw cotton into a continuous skein. It used a series of uneven rollers that rotated at increasing speeds. These rollers drew out the roving, which is a strand of fiber. Then, a bobbin-and-flyer mechanism applied a twist to the fiber. This made the cotton thread thin and strong enough for warp threads.

In 1769, Arkwright patented his most famous invention, the spinning frame. This machine was often called the water frame. It used wooden and metal cylinders to twist threads. These cylinders replaced the use of human fingers. This was a major advance over the spinning jenny. The water frame required very little training to operate. It also produced a strong yarn suitable for warp threads. Initially, these machines were powered by horses. Later, they were adapted to use water power.

Arkwright's journey began in Preston, Lancashire, in 1732. His father, Thomas, was a tailor and a Preston Guild burgess. Richard could not attend school due to costs. Instead, his cousin Ellen taught him to read and write. He began his career as a barber and wig-maker. In the early 1760s, he opened a shop in Bolton. He invented a waterproof dye for fashionable periwigs. The money from this invention funded his first cotton machinery. He married Patience Holt in 1755 and later Margaret Biggins in 1761.

In 1771, Arkwright and his partners built a landmark mill. This was the first water-powered mill, located in Cromford, Derbyshire. The mill housed both carding and spinning operations. It initially employed 200 people. Arkwright later built much larger mills. He built a second mill at Cromford in 1776. He also built mills in Bakewell and Wirksworth. In 1777, he leased the Haarlem Mill in Wirksworth. There, he installed the first steam engine used in a cotton mill. This engine replenished the millpond to drive the waterwheel.

Arkwright also changed how people lived and worked. He built cottages near his mill to house workers. This was the first factory housing development in the world.

Work was highly disciplined and organized into two 13-hour shifts. Bells signaled the start and end of work. Gates were shut precisely at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Late workers lost a day's pay and were excluded from work. The workforce included many children. By the end of his career, nearly two-thirds of his 1,150 employees were children. Some children were as young as seven years old.

Arkwright's business success led to great wealth and honors. He was knighted in 1786 and served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire. He built Willersley Castle in 1791. However, a fire destroyed the castle just as it was finished. He died on August 3, 1792, at the age of 59. He left a fortune of £500,000.
