Ribbonfish

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ribbonfish are slim fish. They look like long ribbons. These fish belong to the Trachipteridae family. There are about ten species in this family. They are pelagic fish. This means they live in the open ocean. They do not eat off the sea floor.

These fish have a special shape. They have long, flat bodies. Their heads are short. They have narrow mouths and weak teeth. A long fin runs down their whole back. This is called a dorsal fin. Their fins are very thin and brittle. They break easily.

Ribbonfish live in deep water. People rarely see them alive. Some grow to be 5 to 8 feet long. Some can grow over 20 feet long. Strong winter winds can push them to the shore.

In Taiwan, people call one kind the earthquake fish. They believe these fish feel the ocean floor move. People saw them after big earthquakes in 2006 and 2007. They were also seen near Japan in 2011. However, they do not always appear after quakes.
