In 2009, researchers found stone tools in the Sengingi River area. These tools included an axle, a drawstring, and stone axes. Scientists believe these tools were used by Homo erectus. The Muara Takus temple complex in Kampar Regency provides further historical clues. This Buddhist temple complex is a remnant of the Srivijaya empire. It dates back to the 12th century. Its architecture is similar to temples found in India.

Following the Srivijaya empire, Islam spread through the region starting in the 14th century. This expansion occurred through trade, marriage, and missionary work by Muslim clerics.

Several Malay sultanates eventually controlled the territory. These included the sultanates of Siak Sri Indrapura, Indragiri, and Johor. The Siak Sultanate became a dominant power on the eastern coast of Sumatra by the late 18th century. It functioned as a trading triangle between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In 1783, records show about 171 merchant ships traveled from Siak to Malacca. Later, these sultanates became protectorates or puppet states of the Dutch East Indies.

Modern Riau was officially inaugurated as a province on 10 August 1957. Before this, it was part of the provinces of Sumatra and Central Sumatra.
