The British arrived in 1812, but they left in 1824. After that, the Dutch took control of the area. There was even a war from 1849 to 1851 when local leaders fought against the Dutch. During the Second World War, the Empire of Japan also occupied the islands. Eventually, the islands became part of the independent nation of Indonesia.

Many different kinds of people live in Bangka Belitung today. Major ethnic groups include the Malays, Chinese, and Javanese. People speak Indonesian as the official language. They also use a local Malay dialect and Hakka to talk to each other.

There are many special things to discover in this province. The name "Belitung" comes from a stone called Billitonite. This stone is also known as Black Meteorite. It was found while people were mining for tin.

History shows that Bangka Belitung was once part of the Sriwijaya and Majapahit kingdoms. Later, various foreign empires established control. The British arrived in 1812, but they left in 1824 following the Anglo-Dutch Treaty. This treaty allowed the Dutch to take control of the area. Local leaders like Depati Barin and Depati Amir fought against Dutch colonization. They led a war from 1849 to 1851. The Dutch won the war, and Depati Amir was exiled. He is now remembered as a national hero.

The islands have a deep connection to mineral resources. The name "Bangka" comes from the Sanskrit word *vanca*, which means tin. This is because the region is very rich in tin mining. The name "Belitung" is linked to Billitonite, also known as Black Meteorite. This stone was discovered during tin mining on Belitung island. Today, Billitonite is a popular souvenir. The soil in the area is often acidic with high aluminium content. It also contains minerals like quartz sand, granite, kaolin, and clay.

Cultural diversity is a major feature of the province. The population was estimated at 1,531,530 in mid-2024. Major ethnic groups include the Malays, Chinese, and Javanese. Chinese migrants, mainly Hakka, have been part of the region since the 13th century. In the 17th century, the rulers of Palembang founded tin mines in Belitung. This led to more Chinese workers being brought in to work the mines. Today, people of different religions and ethnicities live together peacefully.

The economy relies heavily on the primary and secondary sectors. Mining and agriculture are very important parts of the primary sector. The manufacturing sector is a significant part of the secondary sector. In 2007, the province's GDP was quite large. The tertiary sector, which includes trade and services, also makes a big contribution. The capital city, Pangkalpinang, serves as the main urban center.

Bangka Belitung is also part of a larger geological system. The islands are part of the Sunda plains. Because of this, the waters are part of the Sunda Shelf. Most of the sea depth in this area is no more than 30 metres. The fauna, or animal life, shares similarities with the Riau Archipelago. You can find deer, wild boar, eagles, and weasels in the region. This unique combination of geology, history, and biology makes the islands a distinct part of Indonesia.
