The genus Rhododendron is a massive group of woody plants.

It belongs to the heath family, known as Ericaceae. Scientists estimate there are between 850 and 1,200 different species in this group. Most current records list about 1,024 species. These plants are incredibly diverse in how they look and grow. They can range from tiny shrubs to very large trees.

Because they are so varied, studying their relationships has always been a challenge for botanists.

These plants show many different ways of living. Some are evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves all year. Others are deciduous, meaning they drop their leaves seasonally.

You can also find them in many different environments. Some species live in high alpine mountains with small leaves. Tropical species, known as the section Vireya, often grow as epiphytes. An epiphyte is a plant that grows on another plant rather than in the soil.

Even the size of the leaves varies greatly. Some leaves are quite small, while others in species like R. sinogrande are exceptionally large.

Botanists often group rhododendrons by looking at their leaves. Many species are categorized as lepidote or elepidote. Lepidote species have scales on the underside of their leaves. These scales are modified hairs that look like tiny polygonal shapes on a stalk.

Other species have a covering of hairs called indumentum. Scientists also use other physical traits to identify them. These include the number of stamens, which are the pollen-bearing parts of the flower. True rhododendrons typically have ten stamens. Azaleas are a subgenus within the rhododendron group. They are distinguished by having only five anthers per flower.

The name comes from Ancient Greek words. "Rhódon" means rose, and "déndron" means tree. The genus was first formally described by Linnaeus in 1753. He originally listed only five species in his work. At that time, he considered azaleas to be a completely separate genus. It took many years of study to realize they belonged together. By 1836, the genus Azalea was officially incorporated into Rhododendron. This changed how scientists organized these plants forever.

Classification systems have changed many times as more species were found. In the 1800s, Maximovicz used flower bud positions to create eight sections.

Later, Koehne recognized that leaf scales were very important for grouping species. In the 20th century, Sleumer created a complex system. He looked at habitats, flower structures, and leaf scales. He grouped species into subgenera and sections. His work was widely used for many decades. However, new technology has recently allowed for even more precise grouping.

Today, scientists use molecular phylogeny to study these plants. This means they look at DNA sequences to find true evolutionary relationships.

Earlier methods relied on physical descriptions, which could sometimes be misleading. Modern studies, such as those by Goetsch and colleagues, use genetic analysis. This has led to a major realignment of the genus. For example, some older subgenera like Pentanthera and Azaleastrum were found to be polyphyletic. This means the members did not all come from the same single ancestor. As a result, scientists have disassembled those groups and moved species into new sections.

Rhododendrons hold great cultural importance around the world. The rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal. In the United States, it is the state flower of Washington and West Virginia. It is also the state flower for Nagaland and Himachal Pradesh in India. In South Korea, it is the provincial flower of Jeju Province. In China, it represents Jiangxi Province. These plants connect many different regions and cultures through their beauty and variety.
