People have studied these plants for a very long time. The name comes from Greek words meaning "rose tree." A scientist named Charles de l'Écluse described one species in the sixteenth century. It took many years for other botanists to change this idea. By 1836, scientists began to include azaleas inside the rhododendron group.

Scientists use many tools to group these plants today. In the nineteenth century, researchers like Maximovicz used flower buds to create sections. Later, a scientist named Koehne looked at the scales on the leaves. This helped separate the lepidote species from others. In the 1900s, Sleumer created a system based on habitats and flower structures. Today, experts use molecular analysis to study them. This means they look at the tiny DNA sequences inside the plants. This helps them understand how the plants are related through evolution.

It is amazing how much variety exists in one group. Some species are very small in New Guinea. Other species can grow to be quite huge. In some places, they grow as epiphytes. This means they grow on other plants instead of in the soil. You can find them in many different settings. Some live in high alpine mountains with small leaves. Others live in warm tropical areas. Whether in a garden or a wild forest, they are special plants.

Today, scientists use molecular phylogeny to study these plants. This means they look at DNA sequences to find true evolutionary relationships. Earlier methods relied on physical descriptions, which could sometimes be misleading. Modern studies, such as those by Goetsch and colleagues, use genetic analysis. This has led to a major realignment of the genus. For example, some older subgenera like Pentanthera and Azaleastrum were found to be polyphyletic. This means the members did not all come from the same single ancestor. As a result, scientists have disassembled those groups and moved species into new sections.
