The adults even developed a strong upward hook on the jaw. The number of teeth stayed the same during growth. However, the teeth became shorter and stockier in adults. This helped them handle larger and more powerful prey. Even the tail vane changed shape as they aged. It started as an oval shape and became a triangle.

In 1825, a collector named Georg Graf zu Münster found a specimen. At first, Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring thought it was an ancient bird. Later, Georg August Goldfuss realized it was a pterosaur. It was first given the name Ornithocephalus Münsteri. In 1847, Hermann von Meyer named the genus Rhamphorhynchus. Later, in 1861, Richard Owen renamed the species Rhamphorhynchus muensteri. This is the name many scientists use today. The original type specimen was lost during World War II.

Most of the best fossils come from Germany.

For a long time, scientists thought different sized fossils were different species. However, researcher Chris Bennett suggested they were actually different age groups of R. muensteri. This process of changing through life is called ontogeny. Juveniles had short skulls and large eyes. Their toothless jaw tips were rounded and blunt. As they matured, the lower jaw became slender and pointed with an upward hook. The teeth also changed from long to shorter, stockier shapes to handle larger prey.

Detailed studies of bone growth suggest Rhamphorhynchus might have been precocial. This means the young were able to fly soon after hatching with little parental care. While some studies showed a period of slow growth, a 2020 analysis supported the idea of early flight. As the animals aged, their bodies became more structurally sound. For example, the pectoral and pelvic girdles fused together. The pectoral girdle, which supports the wings, reached full fusion by one year of age. This allowed the adult animals to support the stresses of flight.

The history of discovering Rhamphorhynchus is quite complex.

The original type specimen was unfortunately lost during World War II.
