A rest area is a place to stop on big roads.

These spots help drivers and passengers take a break. People can eat, rest, or get fuel for their cars. Many rest areas are in quiet, rural areas.

In these places, there may not be many other shops nearby. Signs on the highway tell you how far the next stop is. Some stops are near cities to help people passing through.

Rest areas have many different parts. Some have toilets, water fountains, and vending machines. Larger ones might have restaurants, gas stations, or even hotels. In Japan, there are two main kinds of stops. Service areas, or SAs, are very large. They have parking for many cars and buses. They might even have a Ferris wheel!

Other stops are called parking areas, or PAs. These are much smaller. They usually only have toilets and drink machines. In some countries, like Malaysia, you can find restaurants built over the road. This lets people reach them from both sides of the highway.
